Made with Real... HFCS?

Jul. 29th, 2010 | 12:13 pm
posted by: rhiannonstone in drpepperfreak

It turns out that not all the 125th anniversary Dr Pepper is made with cane sugar--some bottlers are putting regular, made-with-high-fructose-corn-syrup Dr Pepper in the retro packaging. I've heard from some sources that it's up to the bottler whether or not they use cane sugar for the current campaign, so if you're looking for the stuff made with cane sugar, be sure to check the label!

Have you found the anniversary-packaged Dr Pepper in your area yet? Where? Does it have cane sugar or HFCS?

Couldn't get ahold of any Heritage Dr Pepper for the brief period it was on shelves earlier this year? Don't want to pay for shipping cases of Dublin Dr Pepper from Texas? More made-with-real-cane-sugar Dr Pepper is on the way!
Dr Pepper orders sugar for 125th anniversary
By EMILY FREDRIX (AP)

NEW YORK — Dr Pepper is prescribing some sugar this summer in honor of its 125th anniversary, the latest in a series of moves by soda makers to temporarily swap out high fructose corn syrup.

The spicy soda made by Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. is rolling out Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" this weekend through early September.

Cans and bottles will feature old logos in the company's deep red, and colorful designs with lions and bright swirls of color harkening back to the 60s. Popular phrases such as "I'm a Pepper" also appear.

There are six different can designs. The company wanted to bring back the sugar version to help highlight its past, which dates to the creation of Dr Pepper by pharmacist Charles Alderton in Waco, Texas, in 1885.

Dr Pepper declined to say if it will try out sugar in other brands such as Canada Dry, 7-Up and A&W Root Beer.

Dr Pepper Heritage

Dr Pepper Heritage

I stumbled upon it at Safeway here in Berkeley a couple weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised, because I've been slacking on my PepperFreak mod duties and had no idea it was coming out. I grabbed the last two bottles they had, and they were delicious! It tastes very much like Dublin Dr Pepper; in fact, the differences are so subtle that I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same formulation and the Heritage just tastes different because it's in a glass bottle. I really hope it gets a wider release and becomes a permanent product--it would be nice to not have to pay for shipping cases from Dublin or hunt the good stuff down in specialty shops one expensive bottle at a time--but I'm not holding my breath.

Have you found any yet? Where'd you get it? What do you think?

Dr Pepper to Make Good on Chinese Democracy Stunt
By Eliot Van Buskirk

Soda manufacturer Dr Pepper promised a free soft drink to everyone in America if Guns N' Roses releases its long-awaited Chinese Democracy album before the end of 2008.

Now that Axl and company have set a release date of November 23, Dr Pepper says it will make good on the offer. Those who want to claim a free soda can go to the Dr. Pepper website on November 23, enter some personal information and get a coupon for one 20-ounce drink that should arrive within the following 4 to 6 weeks. (The offer strangely said no free soda for former GNR members Slash and Buckethead.) The freebies expire in February 2009.Read more...Collapse )

Project: Dr Pepper on Campus

Is Dr Pepper sold on or near your college campus? I just transferred to UC Berkeley and there aren't very many places to get my Pepper fix on campus, but there are a few if you know how to find them. Which gave me this idea:

I want to start a list of where to find Dr Pepper on college campuses, a directory of sorts, and I need your help! If you're a current college student or recent graduate (including community/city/junior colleges), please comment and give me the following information:
  • Name of college, and location (city and state)
  • Names (or descriptions, if nameless or name unknown) of places on campus (including residence halls) you can buy Dr Pepper, and in what form factors (Diet and/or regular? Bottles? Cans? Fountain? Glass bottles of Dublin Dr Pepper?)
  • Names of places very close to campus where you can buy Dr Pepper, and in what form factors. "Very close" means you can probably pop over to pick up a Pepper between classes. Put off-campus residence halls here as well.

I'll keep a running list, and eventually put it online. Contributors will be credited.

I found a store in my town here that sells 1 L bottles of Dr Pepper now. I used to see those all the time several years ago when I lived down around Toronto, but they disappeared after some time. Now, I've found them again... and they're a most perfect size, in my opinion. Good dosage, good bottle size, and so on. The store that I've found them at sells them for 69¢ each or $2.00 for four... which is a huge bargain. You spend about $1.59 or so for a 591 mL bottle, regularly. That's in Canadian funds, of course.
Anyways... It was quite an astonishing find. Took me back some years. Really, it did. ;)

Look what I saw at the store yesterday--Diet Dr Pepper popsicles!  I'm visiting my mom in NC and saw these at the local Lowe's Foods. I haven't seen them back home in CA yet. I haven't had a chance to try them yet, either, has anyone else? Are they any good? I'm a little concerned about them being Diet, because I still prefer regular Dr P, but  I'm more than willing to give them  a shot. ;)

Dr Pepper Banned from Schools

Young Pepperfreaks take note--you'll have to start bringing your own Dr Pepper to school.
Coke, Pepsi, Cadbury, and American Beverage Association Agree to New School Policy

NEW YORK (AP) The nation's largest beverage distributors have agreed to halt nearly all soda sales to public schools, according to a deal announced Wednesday by the William J. Clinton Foundation.

Under the agreement, the companies have agreed to sell only water, unsweetened juice and low-fat milks to elementary and middle schools, said Jay Carson, a spokesman for former President Bill Clinton. Diet sodas would be sold only to high schools.

Cadbury Schweppes PLC, Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc. and the American Beverage Association have all signed onto the deal, Carson said, adding that the companies serve "the vast majority of schools." The American Beverage Association represents the majority of school vending bottlers.

The deal follows a wave of regulation by school districts and state legislatures to cut back on student consumption of soda amid reports of rising childhood obesity rates. Soda has been a particular target of those fighting obesity because of its caloric content and popularity among children.

"It's a bold and sweeping step that industry and childhood obesity advocates have decided to take together," Carson said.

Hey, fellow Dr Pepper freaks,

Just wanted to share this new can design I just got:

It has a big 23 on it and the words "Authentic blend of 23 flavors," which I thought was really cool since I have a 23 in my username & it's my favorite number!

I've been in some minor Dr Pepper withdrawals since moving from Texas to Florida. In Texas, I drank regular Dr Pepper in the day & caffeine free Dr Pepper at night. Here, there is no caffeine free Dr Pepper (I've been having to substitute caffeine free Coke, eek), and worse yet, many or most of the restaurants don't have Dr Pepper. In Texas, restaurants usually have DP regardless of whether they otherwise sell Coke products or Pepsi products! Here, they seem to think Mr. Pibb is an adequate substitute for Dr Pepper. I beg to differ! But many places don't even offer that. I know, it could be worse...at least I can get easily get regular Dr Pepper at the store!

Over the past couple days I've finally started seeing non-diet Cherry Vanilla Dr P in stores here in California, so those of you outside of the Heartland who've been waiting patiently for it to appear might want to keep an eye out.

I tried it. I liked it! I don't think I'll switch over from the regular stuff, but I was surprised at how good it tasted. Not at all syrupy and sticky-sweet like the other flavored sodas out there. It reminded me a little bit of Cheerwine, actually, only a lot better. :)

In the UK, we have a new product named Dr Pepper Z. (The Z standing for Zero sugar).

I assume it's to replace Diet Dr Pepper (tastes like pondwater). It's still not as good as regular Dr Pepper, but it's a hell of a lot nicer than Diet Dr Pepper.

newbie with q

Hi all, just joined.

I have a q that may seem a little silly but there ya go...

I have been drinking Dr Pepper for years, even since a friend introduced me to it when we were children. My mother has always wondered why as she thinks it tastes like medicine, but I love the stuff. However, in 2002 I hit a health issue and caffeine was the cause.

I knew that caffeine free Dr Pepper existed, but couldn't find it anywhere in my area of Western Pennsylvania. I even looked across the state line in southwestern NY in a very good grocery store, but no joy. I had a slight withdrawal until we moved a few months later to western Arizona where, lo and behold, I found cases of it in all the food stores in my town!

Is caffeine free Dr Pepper a regional thing? I'm moving back to western PA in a few weeks time and I've begun stockpiling it just in case I still can't get it back there. Do I need to continue doing this?

(on a related note... why is the new flavour in bottles but not the caffeine free stuff???)

Thanks.
